Government of Western Australia Drug and Alcohol Office

About DAO

The Drug and Alcohol Office provides and contracts a statewide network of services relating to prevention, treatment, professional education and training and research activities in the drug and alcohol sector.

We are a statutory authority called the Western Australian Alcohol and Drug Authority (WAADA). Aligned with WA Health, our functions are set out in the Alcohol and Drug Authority Act 1974.

What we do

Our ultimate goal is to see fewer Western Australians impacted by drug and alcohol use. To achieve that, we:

  • provide or contract counselling and treatment services
  • deliver public health education campaigns aimed at creating a safer drinking culture in Western Australia and reducing harm from illegal drug use
  • support local drug action groups and school drug education
  • provide education and training activities for workers and volunteers in the drug and alcohol sector
  • deliver prevention and early intervention programs including programs for Aboriginal people
  • develop and coordinate whole-of-government policies and strategies
  • undertake research and publish reports that relate to drug and alcohol use.
